Date: 15 September 2005 Location: Durban, South Africa The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) is dedicated to preventing suicidal behaviour, to alleviate its effects and to provide a forum where academics, researchers, mental health professionals, crisis workers, volunteers and suicide survivors can interact. The 23rd IASP Congress took place in Durban, South Africa, between September 13-16, 2005, and attracted interest from the global community. The overall theme for the congress was ‘Scaling the Summit. Preventing Suicidal Behaviour in Diverse Cultures’. Among the representatives from Australia were Elizabeth Benson-Stott and James Stott from Hervey Bay, Queensland. Both were invited to present at the conference on the topic of Spirituality and Suicide, and their presentation covered the approaches they used in the area of suicide prevention. Further serious interest in their presentation was received from the Suicide Prevention Association of Japan, a research centre in Sydney, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and an Australian publisher, with many other people from across the globe providing very positive feedback. In addition to presenting at the conference delegates had the opportunity to gain insight into the suicide as an international problem, and the research that has been undertaken in order to address this growing issue. Research from Portugal, Ireland, South Africa, India, USA, Canada, UK, South America, Sweden, Finland, The Netherlands, and New Zealand has been compiled to bring back to Australia to assist in the local fight against suicide. Enquiries may be directed to Elizabeth Benson-Stott on 07 4124 4521.
